5 things Blender should do to be succesful in the industry (via 3dsoul)

Well done article on how to improve Blender to make it fit the industry.

I would add another point to this post is an external SDK/API to make communication easier between application or being able to develop plug-in for it more easly (Blender team if you read this .. cheers 🙂 )

For the OpenEXR / Nuke point … please please do something about it !

Boston Dynamics – Robots and biomechanics development (skynet ?)

I think that if Skynet would have a name today, it would be called Boston Dynamics. :p

Introduction

BigDog walking in snow

If you don’t know this company already (famous for its BigDog), they are genius ! Forget about all those crappy stupid robots that says “hi” and do some weird dance ! Those of Boston Dynamics are totally different and really creepy ! The beginning of the end as most people would say. No seriously, there work is awesome and you should check it out.

Before becoming Boston Dynamics, they were “The Leg Laboratory” (leglab). That was between 1980-1995, more than 15 years ago !!

BigDog

BigDog is probably, as today, the most famous and most advanced robot from Boston Dynamics !
It is a 4 legs mule robot measuring 90 cm long and 76 cm tall and weight 108 Kg. It got a bunch of different sensors also gyroscope and a LIDAR with stereo vision system

BigDog can run at 6 Km and climb hills up to 35° ! all that by carrying  an 154 Kg of stuff. And because it wasn’t enough, it could run for  20 Km without stopping or re-fueling (yes it does use fuel) (UPDATE video March 2010)

The ultimate goal for BigDog is to develop a robot that can go anywhere people and animals can go. The program is funded by the Tactical Technology Office at DARPA.

PetMan

As today, this is there new toy ! It is not a T800 yet, but we are getting close 🙂 (UPDATE video April 2010)

Blender 2.5 Tour (via blenderlabrat) – UPDATED

You can now find 3 new videos on blenderlabrat’s blog about his Blender 2.5 Tour.

There as been a lot of changes since his first tour of 2.5 and I think it’s worth taking a look at this new tour now because the new version of Blender is getting closer and closer to its final look and I think that’s a good starting point for people to have a real and nice sneak peak of what it’s going to be.

The 1rst part covers (user interface) :

  • Context! what it is and how to understand it
  • UI manipulation, split, join, rip, swap areas
  • 3dview tools pane and repeat last operator
  • threading, constant responsive UI
  • new button types
  • misc stuff, like quickly themes colors and such

The 2nd part covers (animation) :

  • Basic Keyframing
  • Keying sets
  • F-curve basics
  • Modifiers
  • Drivers ( didn’t want to work but i showed the procedure)
  • Quat V Eulars
  • Non-Linear Animation Editor

The 3rd part covers (materials/shading) :

  • Tour of new buttons layout and how to use it
  • Multiple material
  • Textures
  • New bump mapping and colour managment
  • Volumetrics
  • Volumetric Textures

The 4th part covers (particles & simulations) :

  • where things are now
  • new cache system
  • effectors
  • Smoke
  • point density texture

Blender Smoke commited to SVN

Video demo of Blender Smoke Simulation by nudelZ

Holy Smoke!, since revision 22053 Blender has Smoke simulation, thanks Daniel Genrich! from graphicall.org

Meaning every version you will get on Graphicall.org later than 22053 should have Smoke simulation enable. I’ll give it a try as soon as I can!

In the mean time, check out Daniel Genrich’s blog for all his examples and demos !
