VFXWages: Public Beta

Posted by François On March - 31 - 2009

Have you ever wonder how much companies where paying for different kind of job. Usually that’s the question that comes to your mind when you are applying to a new job, and the company says “so how much are you going to cost for this job” ^^.  That’s pretty hard to find the information though beside asking friends around.

Well VFXWages was design for that. it’s kind of a Social Network about VFX Wages. Each wages are totally anonymous, but you can see wages filtered by companies and by job (visual, animation, gaming, …). To see other wages, you have to give yours so far (which will be anonymous as I said).

The tool still in beta, but looks nice, go and try it :)

VFXWages: Public Beta.

VFXWages is a global database of hourly monetary rates of people in the film and television visual effects, animation, motion graphics, and gaming industry. It allows you to see where you rate among the rest of the artists in your experience, occupation and location. Have you ever wondered if you’re earning too little? Pondering what a similar artist in your position is making on the other side of the world? Using our Wages system, you can graphically compare wages and salaries around the world.

Blender Tutorials (really good one)

Posted by François On March - 31 - 2009

I think that what gave less credibility to blender at a certain period was the accessibility to it. Not the price since it’s free, but let’s be honest here, it is not the simplest one to get along with out there. The documentation and “good” tutorial about it, wasn’t it’s best point.

Things are changing, and this is getting a real “professional” perspective and here are the links I’m going for :

I’ve just seen this video, it is so beautiful I had to share it. Go watch the HD version, full screen with sound ! that’s excellent !

Antarctica from Darek Sepiolo on Vimeo.

This is a short clip inspired by Hans Zimmer’s music from “The Thin Red Line”. My tribute to great composer and beauty of nature.

Antarctica was the last, 7th continent I visited and dove. Kind of a last stop on a journey called “Earth”. But in fact the journey never ends…

All shots were made with Sony EX1 camera.

CineFx : Jahshaka Reinvented

Posted by François On March - 26 - 2009

I’ve always been looking for a good OpenSource compositing software which would be as good as AfterFx (or at least an honest alternative). The only one that seems to exist was Jahshaka (beside the integrated one in Blender). I’ve always waited for them to bring it to the next level, cause so far it wasn’t a professional tool, but they had ambition to make it better. I just had a look a the source today, and the last updated was more than a year a go !!! So I guess that project was dead, I just google it to be sure, and I found this website http://www.cinefx.org/

I knew that some research came out of the Jahshaka project as Cineplay (video player – read any type of media file) and cinecode (opensource desktop video encoder), but I didn’t knew about CineFX !

At this point CineFx is only the old JahPlayer (which was able to read uncompress video in real-time), but as they said on this blog it seems that they want to make CineFx the way Jahshaka was supposed to be.

Let’s just hope this project won’t die once again !!! :)

Jplayer (video player – read all the format) become CinePlay

JahPlayer become CineFX

Jahshaka will become CineFX

OpenLibraries gets re-invented

Really nice article about how to reproduce the blending modes inside Photoshop using math formulas. Really useful for shaders or code art!
